Staghorn Fern

In tropical areas, staghorn ferns grow to truly massive proportions, jutting dramatically out of the crooks of trees. Their roots hold them in place, and they absorb water and nutrients through their fronds. When young they can easily live in small pots but as they grow older it is recommended to mount them on a board or have them growing in a coconut coir hanging basket. They produce two types of 'leaves' - the tall ones that protrude from the plant known as antler fronds and the round, hard ones that cover the roots called shield fronds. This makes for an interesting and unique plant.

Plant info

  • Botanical name: Platycerium bifurcatum
  • Common name: Staghorn fern
  • Difficulty: Medium
  • Light: Loves bright, indirect light but not direct sun. Can be grown outside in  in warmer climates.
  • Water: Keep soil slightly moist but can dry out between waterings. With more humidity will need less water. Handles less water better than overwatering. Loves being hosed down as the plant will absorb water through its leaves swell as the roots. Leaves showing blackening at the base means you've over watered. Wilting or browning at the tip of the leaves means you are under watering.
  • Humidity: Loves humidity but isn't required. Either place near a humidifier, in the bathroom or mist with water.
